           ACCLAIM DEEP OCEAN BOTTOM PRESSURE RECORDER (BPR) STATIONS
           ==========================================================

File format (FF) A indicates ACCLAIM Format (with 11 columns, and a 4 digit year - see
file README.ACCLAIM.FORMATS under pub/woce/acclaim for a description.)

Note that these are DEEP SEA pressure records, not from coastal pressure
sensors, so station names like 'Amsterdam' are just convenient labels. Also
depths shown are approximate only.

The 'IAPSO' column shows the codes used for these records within the
IAPSO/PSMSL Pelagic Tidal Constants data set.

                     BRIEF DOCUMENTATION FOR BPR STATIONS
                     ====================================

Unless stated otherwise, records in this directory were obtained
from deployments by the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory. Also, unless
stated otherwise, the datum of each record in each file from the same
station (e.g. Amsterdam) should be regarded as being different as it is
impossible to deploy a pop-up sensor at exactly the same location. In
addition, consideration should be given to the fact that all pressure
sensors, especially those at great depths, can be subject to long term
drift.

Station Amsterdam (files amsterdam.*)
=================

This station was occupied by BPR's from POL during 1984-88 and from the
University of Grenoble, France during 1991-94.

POL instrumentation 1984-85 was strain gauge pressure sensor with temperature
also recorded. For 1986-1988, a Paroscientific Digiquartz pressure transducer
was used with temperature also recorded. As stated above, the datum of the
pressure measurements is not maintained from one deployment to the next.

See Vassie et al., Journal of Geophysical Research, 99(C1), 937-949, 1994.

For each POL record a long term instrumental drift has been removed. Station
positions (lat, lon) for the southern Indian Ocean should be regarded as
being uncertain to 1 km (or 1 minute) in these pre-GPS days - if this is an
important factor then notes of the scientists in charge can be consulted as
to SATNAV etc. information.

file amsterdam.8485:

this file is in 11 column ACCLAIM format with three data channels: sea
temperature (deg C), pressure (millibar) and non-tide residual pressure (millibar)
after a tidal analysis. The third channel may be disregarded.

The pressure time series is essentially flat over most of its length but
with a drop of approximately 20 mbar between days 210 and 240 (August 1984).
From comparisons with a second pressure sensor on the rig, which
malfunctioned at day 271, we believe the rapid fall is an instrumental
effect of the strain gauge. See Vassie et al., Journal of Geophysical
Research, 99(C1), 937-949, 1994.

files amsterdam.8686, amsterdam.8687 and amsterdam.8788:

these files are in 11 column ACCLAIM format with one data channel: pressure (millibar).
Data for 2-8 February 1987 were missing and were interpolated using tidal
predictions. Also scans flagged as 'questionable data' data for 8-9 Feb.

files amsterdam.deep.8687 and amsterdam.deep.8788:

these files are in 11 column ACCLAIM format with total pressure in channel 8 in mbar.
These deployments were at a greater depth than the previous ones. See
Vassie et al., Journal of Geophysical Research, 99(C1), 937-949.

For the records for 1991 onwards, obtained from colleagues at the University
of Grenoble, files are in 11 column ACCLAIM format with a single data channel of
pressure in millibar. No attempt has been made to remove possible
long-term drifts in these pressure measurements.

Station Kerguelen (files kerguelen.*)
=================

This station was occupied by BPR's from POL during 1986-88 and from the
University of Grenoble, France thereafter.

POL instrumentation consisted of Paroscientific Digiquartz pressure
transducers, with long term instrumental drift removed from each of the
records. As with data from Amsterdam and elsewhere, the datum of the
pressure measurements is not maintained from one deployment to the next.
See Vassie et al., Journal of Geophysical Research, 99(C1), 937-949, 1994.

file kerguelen.8686:

this file is in 11 column ACCLAIM format with two data channels: total
pressure (millibar) and residual pressure (millibar) after a tidal analysis.
This second channel may be ignored.

files kerguelen.8687 and kerguelen.8788:

these files are in 11 column ACCLAIM format with one data channel: total pressure
in (millibar).

For the records for 1988 onwards, obtained from colleagues at the University
of Grenoble, files are in 11 column ACCLAIM format with a single data channel of
pressure in millibar. No attempt has been made to remove possible
long-term drifts in these pressure measurements.

Station Crozet (file crozet.9394)
==============

This record was contributed to 11 column ACCLAIM by colleagues from the University
of Grenoble, France and covers June 1993 - October 1994. No attempt has
been made to remove possible long-term drifts in the pressure measurements.

File is in 11 column ACCLAIM format with units of millibars for a single sensor.

=========================================================================

Station CK2 (file ck2.9394)
===========

CK2 was station number 2 on the west side of the 'Crozet-Kerguelen line'
during a POL Indian Ocean cruise during March 93 - March 94. This file
has instrumental drift removed and is in 11 column ACCLAIM format. Three pressure
sensors were used: one Quartztronic (column 6 of file) which is very
temperature sensitive; and two Digiquartz (columns 8 and 10) with their own
temperature measurements (columns 7 and 9 respectively) which should be
acceptable.

Units in each channel: 6 (mbar), 7 (deg C), 8 (mbar), 9 (deg C), 10 (mbar)

=========================================================================

Station FP1 (file fp1.8384)
===========

This file is in 11 column ACCLAIM format with total pressure (mbar) in channel 9
obtained from a Digiquartz sensor. (Another total pressure measurement is
in channel 8 but that is noisy). Temperature is in channel 7 (deg C).

The file contains merged data from two separate deployments at almost the
same position - see Cartwright et al., Journal of Geophysical Research,
92(C1), 725-741, 1987 for details.

The deployment was one of several made on the Atlantic equator as part of
the FOCAL experiment.

Stations Tristan-A, -B and -C
=============================

These files are from POL's 'Tristan Triangle Experiment' around Tristan
da Cunha which consisted of a series of BPR measurements made in a 'triangle'
(sites A,B,C) around the island between 1985-88, for details see

Spencer, R., Foden, P.R., McGarry, C., Harrison, A.J., Vassie, J.M.,
Baker, T.F., Smithson, M.J., Harangozo, S.A. and Woodworth, P.L. 1993.
The ACCLAIM programme in the South Atlantic and Southern Oceans.
International Hydrographic Review, 70, 7-21.

Bottom pressure at all three sites was found to be very coherent, for
example see

Hughes, C.W. and Smithson, M.J. 1996. Bottom pressure correlations in the
south Atlantic. Geophysical Research Letters, 23(17), 2243-2246.

Files are in 11 column ACCLAIM format. For each one the Digiquartz transducer channels
are the most quiet i.e.

tdca1.data-d  use channels 10
.. a2           ..          9

.. c1           ..         8/10
.. c2           ..         9/10

The -d in the filename indicates that long term drift has been removed from
each pressure channel.

Station MARFRIO
===============

The Marfrio Mk4 BPR was deployed by the James Clark Ross (Karen Heywood's
cruise) and was recovered by Bob Spencer, Afranio de Mesquita and Carlos
Franca on board the Marfrio fishing boat in early 1997. The deployment
was a collaboration between POL and the Instituto Oceanografico of the
University of Sao Paulo.

Data are in 11 column ACCLAIM format and good data exist for May 1995 to May 1996
in channels:

Station PAVASAS
===============

This record stems from a short deployment of a POL 'Mark 1' BPR by the
Instituto Oceanografico of the University of Sao Paulo in 1987. PAVASAS
stands for 'Pontos Anfidromicos e Variacoes Sazonais no Atlantico Sul
(Amphidromic Points and Seasonal Variations in the South Atlantic)' which
is the IOUSP research project. The deployment was in 104m water on the
Brazilian shelf.

Data are in 11 column ACCLAIM format in channels:
  Channel 6 Pressure (mbar) from a strain gauge sensor
  Channel 7 Pressure (mbar) from a digiquartz sensor
(Temperature data are also available from original data files)

The data in channel 7 are to be preferred over channel 6. Constituents
from a tidal analysis of the data show good correspondence with the Texas
CSR3.0 model.

Stations in the Scotia Sea and Drake Passage
============================================

POL deployments in this area were first made in a section between the
Falkland Islands and Signy in the South Orkney islands. These stations
have names like 'FS1'. Recording then moved west to two deeper (4000 m)
stations on the western side of the Drake Passage ('ND1' and 'SD1'), and,
most recently, have been on a section between the Falklands and Elephant
Island along the official 'Drake Passage' hydrographic section for the
World Ocean Circulation Experiment ('ND2' and 'SD2' with the stations
including MYRTLE in between).

The nomenclature 'ND1' etc. follows that of

M.Meredith, 1995. On the temporal variability of the transport through
the Drake Passage. University of East Anglia Ph.D thesis. In other
publications, for example:

Woodworth, P.L., Vassie, J.M., Hughes, C.W. and Meredith, M.P. 1996.
A test of the ability of TOPEX/POSEIDON to monitor flows through
the Drake Passage. Journal of Geophysical Research, 101(C5), 11935-11947.

ND1 is referred to as DN92, SD1 as DS92, ND2 as DN93 and SD2 as DS93.

Most instruments were Paroscientific Digiquartz (DQ) pressure transducers
with temperature also recorded. BPR's had typically 3 sensors. Instrumental
drift has attempted to be removed from all records.

From tidal analysis, data from this third deployment at FS1 appear to be
about 6 minutes too soon using semidiurnals (i.e. phase lags are about 3
degrees less) and correspondingly different values for diurnals. There may
well therefore be a systematic clock shift in this deployment.

 However, note
that a temperature sensor failed on this deployment, thus data for 21st

Also note the warnings about timings etc. at start of file - phases here
look about 3 degrees later compared to deployments 1 and 2, and there are
residual tidal signals. No instrumental drift has been removed from this

Temperature has a high pre-division factor hence low resolution
3 pressure channels show good agrement
The temperature sensor fails from 21st July 1992 onwards. The records
after this date are therefore not temperature corrected. The
variability in the low frequency is noticeable higher so
treat this part of the record with caution
Tidal analysis shows M2 phase 3 degrees later than previous deployments
There is no indication of timing errors but a tidal residual is
evident of approx +- 5 mbar in all channels. READ INVENTORY FILE

This file was updated by Philip Axe on 22 May 1998. 15 minutes was added
to the timing of each scan, as the originals were 15 minutes too early.
When the data was processed, the scan numbers did not tie up with the start
and end of the record, and field deployment notes weren't available at that
time. The correct timing was found as the sensors were unplugged at sea, and
this time is identifiable in the record. For this 15 minute correction to
be correct, we must accept that the scan counter did not increment by 1 at
the beginning of the record. This has happened before, and so we are
confident of the corrected timings.

15 minutes has been added to each scan time (22 May 1998, paxe). This
was because there was uncertainty at the time of processing between the
scan numbers and the start and end of the record. This 15 minute
correction should have resolved this problem. If there are any problems
please contact POL.

Because of its length, the batteries ran out shortly before it was recovered
and so there was no end time to check clock drift against. The instrument was
redeployed 1996-1997 and so this data was re-processed using the next year's
drift. The timings had some uncertainty in them, as the only available
deployment time was 'time on the bottom', and this was a bit uncertain. As a
result of harmonic analysis, and user queries, we have ADDED 15 MINUTES to
the original timings.
