History

The NTSLF was established in 2002 at the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory, which has a rich history of tidal and sea level research. The laboratory became part of the National Oceanography Centre in 2010.

  • Influential scientists – Throughout the history of oceanography at Liverpool and Bidston, there have been many influential scientists who have left their mark.
  • William Hutchinson was a remarkable man, who rose from being a common sailor to be a privateer captain.
  • The time ball and the one o'clock gun – Liverpool Observatory was built at Waterloo Dock in 1845 and one of its objectives was to establish Greenwich time and to indicate it each day to the citizens and the Port of Liverpool.
  • Tide gauge instrumentation – Tide gauge technology has advanced considerably over the last few decades.
